Making the Case for Gothic Transformation

Ever wonder why there's a chill that crawls up your spine and down your neeck when passing through Hollywood? No one can REALLY explain it...except maybe me.

"Goth·ic (gothik) adj.GothWord History: The combination Gothic romance represents a union of two of the major influences in the development of European culture, the Roman Empire and the Germanic tribes that invaded it. The Roman origins of romance must be sought in the etymology of that word, but we can see clearly that Gothic is related to the name Goth used for one of those invading Germanic tribes. The word Gothic, first recorded in 1611 in a reference to the language of the Goths, was extended in sense in several ways, meaning "Germanic," "medieval, not classical," "barbarous," and also an architectural style that was not Greek or Roman. Horace Walpole applied the word Gothic to his novel The Castle of Otranto, a Gothic Story (1765) in the sense "medieval, not classical." From this novel filled with scenes of terror and gloom in a medieval setting descended a literary genre still popular today; from its subtitle descended the name for it.i·cal·ly adv."

Although, this definition or origins refers mainly to the midevil era (1200's to the 1500's), most gothic culture revolves specifically around the sexually repressed and murderous Victorian Era. Ahh! Shadows pass by, slicing through the London fog asmysterious footsteps and the clip-clop of horse hooves pass by, unseen in the distance. Beware! Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde reigned supreme only to be a foreshadowing of the time's most notorious and feared serial killer...Jack the Ripper. 1897 marked the birth of Brahm Stoker's Dracula, and of course we all know the "gothic novel" Frankenstein by Mary Shelly.

I've been living in Los Angels for over seventeen years, now and I'm pretty sure I've covered nearly EVERY scene there is to be had in this bizzare counterculture of America. But it is within the dankest of smoke-filled crypts and smokey black lights have I found my home in Gothic Hollywood. Infamous for it's horrific murders, Los Angeles is home to some of the most deadly hommicides, as well as it's share of grisly suicides. From The Manson-Tate Murders to Wonderland right down the stree from me, I can never get my fill for the darkest corners this tarnished glitter pot has to offer.

The most intellectually stimulating and spirtually titilating hangouts are the most gothic and loudest . For example, Club Cherry in Hollywood offers gothic partying and harsh alternative bands.

Gone, but not gorgotten is the Mega-Mixer Queen Mary that gave us the entire spectrum of freaky phantasms Monday through Friday, specializing in Transgander lifestyles. Throughout its time, The Queen Mary nightclub on Ventura Blvd was host to some multiple BDSM meetings, kinky sex paties and of course the underlying fashion was ultra-gothic.

But what of the rest of "above-ground" America?

Pauley Perrette successfully brought gothic lifestyle to the workplace..the Military intelligence workplace. Though it was quite a stretch, Pauley has given us a glimpse of how an uninhibited, yet stylish everyday, workplace necromancy can be. Week after week I would drool over this woman. I still drool over her. I sinply do not watch the television show, knowing I can meet here in real life at Club Cherry where her band bangs out punk-metal noise at an alarming rate.

Mainstream television dabbled breifly with goulish comedy during those rebellious sixties.Chales Addam 's Adams Family gave us a morbid clan of ghouls who made no apology for their creepy inclinations. Despite the weirdness, they still had love and the family cohesiveness that makes a famliy..a FAMILY. Btw, Puglsey was first named Pubesly. I'll bet you'll never guess why they changed it. Another family oriented macabre sitcom was the ever popular Munsters series. Again, no apologies for their family freaks theat held the

sacred family bonding. Why they even had a "white sheep" of the family...Marilyn Munster. The " blonde-bombshell" freak", referenced Monroe's exceptional beauty in an exceptionally bizzare family.

Sin City - 2005 Blurred and twisted images wear heavey upon the soul as Frank Miller's graphic (gothic) exporation into a perpuatual city of pitch blackness. Moral courage and consious is put to the test as human (and non-human) endurance is masterfully mixed by brilliant director Roberto Rodriguez and guest director, Quentin Tarrantino. with remarkable precision and ultra-violence. Staying true to Millers characters and angst, Rodriguez and Tarrantino bring to life some the most innovative effects to agenrea that already reels the imagination. If you haven't seen Sin City yet, but want to..see it immediately. If your leery of seeing Sin City..stay away from it. It may mess you up something fierce. Its definitely not for the meek of heart. Images of hardcore reality combine with surreal devastation, beautifully acted, written and drected. This movie ENGULFS and entire generation of gothic novels into one stunning masterpiece. I highly reccomend it.
Bladerunner -1982 Perhaps the most believable scenerio of a neon-gothic future lie deep in the images and sounds of Ridley Scott's provacative interpretation of Philip K. Dick's Bladerunner. A nightmarish maelstrom of a crowded, polluted planet, packed so tight, its becomes difficult to tell the humans from their psuedo-slave counterparts. Mesmerizing as it is frightening, this riviting glimpes into desperation of "replicant' rebels excaping TO earth, looking for their creater. Harrison ford plays the "anti-hereo", coerced into hunting down psychotic, yet philosphical machines that should never have been given emotions or a nervous system in the first place. As the Building0sized video ads folow us to the most decrepid of 2019 Los Angeles, our senses are filled with dread of the future.

As you can see, the new with the yearly onslaught of old & new friends in front and behind the camera brought laughs &sometimes even tears.
