2009 Oscar Reflections:
Katherine Bigelow beats her ex , Avatar falls flat & those darm Post Mortem Omissons. by CJ Davidson

The Academy Awards and its infinite hype raged on to the bitter end as I started my web show. I usually don’t watch the Oscars since I live in a town that doesn’t allow a single breath to be taken without examining every minute aspect including which feminine hygiene spray Meryl Streep will be using as she struts down the red carpet for the thirty-first time (since she won Best Supporting Actress for the Deer Hunter back in 1979). Besides, I had my spies passing on the evening’s events within the chat.
I heard Karin cheering as Jeff Bridges walked away with Best Actor, long overdue. In the end, Avatar picked up only 3 Oscars as The Hurt Locker walked away with six statues while Katherine Bigelow made history as the first female to win Best Director, and hopefully not the last. I was pleased our U.S. Servicemembers were finally getting the recognition they deserved, as well.
Avatar vs. The Hurt Locker
The David and Goliath story with James Cameron’s 2 billion dollar-grossing masterpiece, Avatar won only 3 of its nine nominations, including cinematography, visual effects & sound. Many simply shrug off the snub by recalling how the Academy wishes to be recognized. An emotional, gut-wrenching Iraqi War-Vet fiction flick translates well for the conservative and values producers as well as heartland America viewers.

Others, like myself, always knew of the thick make-up façade of Hollywood APPEARING to be art and science driven, basing it’s judgments on performances, styles and overall integrity of the actor. I recall, Star Wars losing to Annie Hall with the Academy stating back in the day, “Annie Hall reflects the core art and performance values of the Academy.”
Others are quite skeptical, fearing ulterior motives...such as unemployment.
So why did the Academy hand so many statuettes to the lowest-grossing movie in academy history? According to MTV Movies Blog’s Brian Warmoth says, For whatever reason, boomer-age people, older Gen X-ers [in the Academy] are threatened by it," journalist and Hollywood Elsewhere writer Jeff Wells told MTV News. "They feel on some level that they're going to be lost, that they're going to be digitally wiped out in the future."
Members of the academy, actors fear its revolutionary science of special effects will wipe out acting jobs, creating an extinct breed of human impressionist, doomed to wait tables where they all started from.
According to Avatarblog’s , “Maybe SAG is just worried that the increasing use of CGI will put human actors out of work,” They even go on to say that The Academy failed to recognize the actual working actors within the movie, Sigourney Weaver, for example.,

According to The Guadian.co.uk’s Film Blog, “The idea of entirely removing the actor from the film-making process is not one that has really taken root in Hollywood, though it represents an attractive prospect for currently cash-strapped studios. Were it possible to shoot photo-real footage using just a voiceover artiste to provide dialogue, film-makers could potentially save millions.”
Remember, when an actor is not on screen, he losses revenue.
When asked the Academy for a comment, I was given an email publicity@oscars.org, which will be emailed, after I publish this, of course.
The Future of CGI in Hollywood
For producers and studios, CGI actors may put flesh and blood actors out of business like it did in Simone, Al Pacino’s digital “Pygmalion” creation that saves his failing career and nearly lands him in jail for “murder”.
I suppose the ONLY real worry would be The U.S. Supreme Court granting “humanship” to CGI characters like it did with corporations (essentially, a corporation is a folder of legal documents), last month. SAG wages and benefits would be collected by their studio “Agent/Creators”, giving producers another form of “virtual slave” income. As CGI characters become more sophisticated , they will become more vocal, demanding acting wages, threatening a universal CGI strike, shutting down mass productions around the globe, causing a cinematic nightmare, after relying on so many of them for film production.
Everybody check out Goofy’s new attorney from lower Manhattan.

THOSE DARN OMMISSIONS
What was rather disturbing were all the omissions of famous stars who died last year. Among those names were missing from the memoriam of departed stars were Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Ricardo Montalban and Bea Arthur. Arguably, time and movie service determine celebrity status, but Michael Jackson, who has many movie soundtracks under his belt, had only one full acting role and that was The Wiz back in 1978. Montalban alone has stared in movies such as The Chosen way back in 1942. The Academy mentions who it REALLY likes and Jackson’s megalith fanbase., not those who have given their lives, hearts and souls to the film industry, like Montalban.
